Your people are your business in every sense. You rely on them to do the tasks that fall within their job role and sometimes to do things that fall outside it. You need them to be part of your team and to bring real benefits to your business. Engaged employees take things several steps further, and that’s good for you, for them and for your business. So, what does an engaged employee look like?

Works hard towards the organisation’s goals

An engaged employee knows and understands where your business is heading and how it is going to get there. In most cases, this requires good, open communication between leaders and staff, ensuring that those goals are clear, and that everyone understands their role in achieving them.

Looks for ways to improve

This can cover both the employee’s individual role, and other areas they come into contact with. A willingness to look for solutions to problems, to introduce different ways of working, or suggest new income streams demonstrates a desire for both the individual and the business to succeed.

Is a great ambassador

Someone who is really engaged in your business is a great ambassador for it. Not only will they tell your story well to your customers and suppliers; they will tell their family and friends, potentially helping you with future sales and recruitment.

Goes the extra mile

It might be an overused phrase, and as an employer, you have to make sure you don’t take advantage of people who go beyond their role, but employees who go the extra mile are clearly positively invested in your business. When this happens, make sure you show your appreciation, and perhaps give something back in return to show that you value the attitude shown.

Invests their career in your company

People who are dissatisfied with their jobs go elsewhere. Engaged, motivated and well-looked-after employees stay with you longer, understand your business better and have no need to look for another job. If you work with them to develop their skills and knowledge, you will end up with a highly skilled and motivated workforce that is constantly striving to make your business the best it can be.

Engaged employees need engaged managers. Make sure you are leading by example, making use of the right communication and engagement tools and rewarding success when it happens. These are great steps towards and engaged and motivated workforce.
